Unicode approval does not install an emoji on every phone
Unicode defines the character and sequence. Apple, Google, Samsung, Microsoft, and individual apps then add their own artwork on separate schedules. That is why a released emoji can still appear as a box on older software.
- Released standard: the Unicode sequence is final and can be copied as text.
- Vendor rollout: your operating system still needs artwork and font support.
- Beta candidate: do not treat the name, code point, or inclusion as final.
New emoji questions
Release status is separated from phone availability so a draft is never presented as a working emoji.
How do I get the new emoji on iPhone?
Install iOS 26.4 on a supported device, then reopen the emoji keyboard. App and device support can still vary, and a recipient with older software may see a box instead of a newer emoji.
What was the Emoji 17.0 release date?
Emoji 17.0 was released with Unicode 17.0 on September 9, 2025. Phone makers then added their own artwork on separate schedules; Apple included eight new emoji designs in iOS 26.4.
Why does Unicode list 163 Emoji 17.0 additions while Apple lists eight?
Apple's release notes count eight new emoji designs. Unicode's total of 163 includes characters plus skin-tone, gender, family, and other standardized sequences, so the figures measure different things.
Are Unicode 18.0 emoji available to copy yet?
No. Unicode 18.0 is still in beta, so its candidates, names, code points, and final inclusion can change. This tracker intentionally disables copying for beta candidates.
Is the Fingerprint emoji new for 2026?
Fingerprint belongs to Emoji 16.0, which was released before Emoji 17.0. It remains a high-interest newer emoji, but it is not an upcoming Unicode 18.0 candidate.
Why does a new emoji show as an empty box?
The character can be valid Unicode before an operating system, font, browser, or app has added artwork for it. Update the device and app; if support is still missing, the text may render as a box or placeholder.
